About Sweet Valley Shea Co.
About our Shea Butter: Our Shea Butter is Fairly Traded from West Africa. The women of West Africa are paid a fair wage this way & given improved living conditions because of it. The Shea tree takes at least 20 years to start producing fruit, & the entire production process is led by women. They walk several miles each day to reach the Shea trees. They can't collect the nuts until they have fallen to the ground, so they stand bending all day, gathering and sorting with their hands, throwing out the ones with bugs, etc. They carry the nuts back home on their heads, and once home, they are washed and dried in the sun. Then they are then cracked, roasted, milled in cold water, then hot water, boiled, purified, filtered, & packed using very little machinery. It makes us feel good knowing that we're helping the women of West Africa earn a living...and since the women there control the revenue from Shea sales, they are able to use the money earned on household items like clothing, school supplies, and livestock. We feel special just getting our hands on something so good, from so far away, that took so much manual labor to get to us!
